OUR BOOK OF PRAYERS FOR COUPLES
We know that the Bible commands Wives to “Submit to Your Husbands” (Ephesians 5:22-24), and Husbands to “Love Your Wives” (Ephesians 5:25-31). Sarah and Abraham showed us a perfect example of couples who cared for each other. Through the struggles of migrating from place to place, and childlessness, they stuck together. Sarah even suggested to Abraham to engage in sexual intercourse with her Egyptian maid, Hagar: “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Her motive was to raise a family for Abraham through the servant and Abram agreed. One can conclude that this first covenant couple engaged in prayers throughout their lives of struggles and challenges.
In similar fashion, Genesis 29:21 clearly says that “Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.”
Similar prayer relationship can be inferred between Jacob and Rachel, and Elkanah and Hannah (both due to childlessness) and Boaz and Ruth (because of their age difference, and the need to redeem her for her diseased husband). In the New Testament, we have a similar story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John Baptist. They were childless until very old age even though he was a respected priest in the temple of the Lord.
It was not all easy for these couples. Eventually Sarah threw out Hagar and her son calling them illegitimate. Isaac and Rebekah experienced serious deception because when God spoke to Rebekah during pregnancy about her coming twin sons and their life experiences, she never mentioned it to Isaac. In fact, she colluded with Jacob to dupe Esau of his birthright, an event of eternal consequences.
Elkanah was caught between loving Hannah and being accused of favoritism by his other wife who had many children. Angel Gabriel pronounced a mute and dump punishment on Zechariah for the entire duration of Elizabeth’s pregnancy!
“Our Book of Prayers for Couples” is an answer to the paucity of prayer relationship between husbands and wives.
